The next time you cry out “I have nothing to wear!” and avidly start searching for just the right outfit at Loft, take a minute to look at your overflowing closet and have the grace to blush. Many people are of the pack rat tribe. They treat their closets as a repository of the clothes they don’t wear because they don’t fit, are out of fashion, or were simply forgotten, “just in case.” The clothes they actually wear are usually behind the bathroom door or on a chair. If you are a member of this tribe, it does not mean that you shouldn’t buy any more clothes. However, you should hold off until you have somewhere to put them. Here are three ways to reclaim your closet and put some order into your life.
If you forgot you had it, you don’t need it
Chances are, you haven’t worn an outfit for years if you can’t even remember having it. Putting it back in the closet only means you will not use it for the same number of years in the future. Instead, put everything you don’t remember owning into a box and give it away.
If it doesn’t fit, get rid of it
It is fine to say you might one day fit into your favorite stretch jeans again, especially now that skinny jeans are back in fashion. However, if you keep everything you like but can’t squeeze into, you would still have your onesies. Do yourself a favor and put it in the box with the stuff you forgot you had. You make more space for the stuff you use now, and the stuff you want to have.
If it’s out of fashion, it should also be out of your closet
There is really no sense in holding on to something that shows everyone exactly how old you are. Dated clothes have no place in your life. Preserve your illusions and keep only the clothes that won’t age with you.
If you are anything like 90% of the pack rat tribe, you should now have a nearly empty closet. Make sure the pack rat in you does not fill it up again, and enjoy your shopping!
